Connect better to the reader's mind

Call it a writing course, or a presentation course if you like. We’d say it’s about the thinking that precedes the actual writing. When you have achieved clarity in your thinking, you can connect better to the reader’s mind.

Connect better to the reader’s mind

Call it a writing course, or a presentation course if you like. We’d say it’s about the thinking that precedes the actual writing. When you have achieved clarity in your thinking, you can connect better to the reader’s mind.

Our world has grown very complex - surely you know. What you may not know is that there are techniques that can help you eliminate unnecessary complexity, creating insight into the things that really matter.

Better understanding

Your readers will appreciate the clarity, because they can:

  • immediately see what you have to say,
  • grasp the storyline without having to dive deeply into the details,
  • digest the information easily, because it is structured according to how our brain functions.

Better follow-up

This is the most important benefit of the course: when your thinking – and your writing – are clear, your readers can take better decisions and better follow-up actions. Compare that to bulky reports that nobody likes to read, and as a result have no impact.

Plus, you’ll enjoy a more structured writing process and being able to collaborate with colleagues on the same document.

‘This is the only course I’ve ever taken that I still enjoy the benefits of every day fourteen years later’

- Roeland van Straten, consultant

Take a look at these two consultants

While watching this short film, you may have noticed that the consultant on the right – our shining example – structured his presentation in a pyramid shape, with the key message at the top. This is often referred to as ‘The Pyramid Principle’, which was developed at McKinsey’s consultancy firm by Barbara Minto (with foundations going back as far as Aristotle).

This method is used worldwide and serves as the de facto standard for all kinds of business writing: advice, (investment) proposals, analyses, pitches, (market) research, etc.

Our course is based on this, and on our 40+ years of experience with it (as Oberman Group), using the best examples and exercises – and with lots of useful feedback from our trainers!

Change your thinking

What we’ll teach you is nothing less than a change in the way you think: from writing down your own train of thought or research process – based on what you might have learned during your studies – to a more result-oriented approach, focusing on what is relevant for your reader.

Change your thinking

In line with how the brain functions

You’ll learn how to structure your documents in a way that makes it easier for the reader to quickly see the points of interest, and if desired dive deeper into the supporting details.

It’ll make the information easier to absorb, remember and reflect upon, leading to better follow-ups.

In order to achieve this, during the course you’ll practice how to:

  • formulate headings that are easy for a reader to scan,
  • create categories that make it easy for a reader to store and retrieve information,
  • distinguish between different types of documents and different types of arguments.

‘Even if not every document that you write after the course has the perfect pyramid structure, the thinking behind it will always stay with you’

- a comment we’ve received numerous times in the past 40 years

The writing course that sharpens your thinking - the thinking course that improves your writing.

You sure can! Group courses have been our core business since the 1970s (as Oberman Group). Doing the course together – online or at your office – will make it easier for your team members to grasp the relevance, also because we’ll be using documents from your organisation – a real eye-opener. For a quote, please contact Roy van de Graaf.

This is one of our specialties. It means you’ll attend an online session, a virtual classroom, where you work on an exercise – together or alone – usually in a breakout room. The trainer will monitor how you’re doing and help you improve. It’s the fastest way to make progress.

An active subscription is valid for 5 months. If this isn’t enough time, perhaps because other things kept you busy, just send us an e-mail and we’ll be happy to extend this period for you.
